More Tomato Porn

tomato harvest Aug 12, 2013Yesterday’s tomato harvest was absolutely phenomenal: nine Caspian Pinks (not including  two eaten by a squirrel) and 14 luscious, deep red Paul Robeson beauties. Yes, I realize there are only a dozen Paul Robeson tomatoes in that photograph. I can count, but I simply cannot resist a mouth-wateringly juicy, homegrown tomato. I devoured two while standing in the garden (I carry my salt shaker with me). I highly recommend it.

so I’ll be savoring these heavenly humdingers for at least a few more weeks …

tomato sandwich 2013mostly uncooked, in tomato sandwiches like this one (isn’t that Paul Robeson something?) as well as in classic BLTs and gazpacho – all perfect on a hot summer day.

Now that I’ve made your mouth water, I suppose I ought to post a recipe. So, without further torture, I give you two of my favorites:

Tomato Sandwiches a la Julia Child: good crusty bread “slathered with Hellman’s mayonnaise” (the real stuff please) with slices of ripe, homegrown tomato – still warm from the sun. I add a touch of salt and freshly cracked Tellicherry Black Peppercorns. Devour immediately. Julia ate hers with a knife and fork. I love Julia, but I think the licking of fingers enhances the experience – so long as you’re dining alone. During tomato season, I look forward to this sandwich everyday.

Classic BLT: combine lightly toasted bread, crispy bacon, whole leaf lettuce, Hellman’s mayo and slices of ripe, homegrown tomato – still warm from the sun and seasoned with salt and freshly cracked Tellicherry Black Peppercorns. Lip-smacking good. If you want to be decadent, add a slice of Swiss cheese. This sandwich should absolutely never be consumed with a knife and fork; the licking of fingers is an essential part of the experience.

I think Julia would agree.

  1. There is no better sandwich than a good sun-warmed tomato, mayo, salt and pepper. Everyday is right! Wooo! Its been only about a week for me and I’m enjoying every one!

  2. Paul Robeson tomato is one of the “perfect tomatoes”! This year we grew Black from Tula another Russian black. It is beautiful, too, and tasty. This year my Black Cherries were being eaten before they made it to the house..lol…robbie:-)
