I love the juxtaposition of these orange Clivia miniata flowers and our orange Eichler front door (visible in the background, seen through the glass walls of our living room). Of course, this was no happy accident. Orange clivias were specifically chosen by the original architect of our house and inspired the color of our very distinctive front door. Our clivias just began blooming and happily, they’ll continue to flower for the next several weeks. If you live in a cooler climate, clivias make excellent houseplants. These South African natives like dry air, dry soil and no direct sunlight. They even like being potbound. In fact, these sturdy clumping plants look good year round, so long as you occasionally wash off their arching, dark evergreen leaves and don’t overwater.
