I’ve just returned home from two weeks in Italy and one of my absolute favorite moments occurred when we stumbled upon a musical advent calendar near the Duomo in Milan. Each evening, from now until Christmas, a window of the municipal building located in Piazza Duomo opens at 6:00 pm, revealing a musician. It began on December 1st with a lone musician playing Christmas songs. When we were there, on December 2nd, there were two musicians playing and according to the official website of Milan Tourism, on December 24th, the final night, “all 24 musicians will join as a joyful orchestra to celebrate Christmas Eve.” The concert lasts for 30 minutes and was just what I needed to get into the Christmas spirit. I’m so thankful I was able to attend even just one performance – it was utterly beautiful! If anyone reading this happens to find themselves in Milan this month, I highly recommend this lovely (and completely free!) Christmas concert.
The Milan Tourism website sums it up best: “With this musical advent calendar, Austria Tourism invites all the citizens of Milan and guests of the city to share the joy of the arrival of the festive season, sending out a message in a language shared by all: music.”
Thank you to the talented musicians and organizers – Austria Tourism, the Municipality of Milan and the EventAffair creative agency – for such a lovely gift! Bravo!
And for those who’d like to watch from wherever home might be, here is a link to a YouTube video of the event. Enjoy!
Merry Christmas and Buon Natale!
